Foggy Empire

I had a great view of the Empire State Building from my hotel room on my last visit to New York City. One evening while I was there the fog rolled in during the evening and the Empire State Building, illuminated in blue, lit up the fog as it was rolling into Midtown Manhattan. I was able to capture this log exposure of the famous landmark through my hotel window.

Grand Central Terminal

Most people call this place Grand Central Station, but this is actually Grand Central Terminal. Grand Central Station is actually the post office or refers to the subway stop underneath the building. Grand Central Terminal is at 42nd and Park Avenue and is a commuter railway terminal in Midtown Manhattan.

My last visit to New York I was able to acquire a tripod permit to capture images in Grand Central Terminal. I wasn’t able to access the east or west balcony, which was a disappointment, but took advantage of the permit to capture a long exposure of the main concourse. With the help of my B+W 10-Stop filter I was able to capture this 5 minute exposure and eliminate almost all of the people walking around on the concourse floor that evening. The American flag now hangs in the main terminal and was placed there shortly after the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center.

The view below is toward the West Balcony which is now home to Michael Jordan’s Steak House. On the left side of the concourse is the ticket booths and in the center of the terminal is the famous four-faced clock at the information booth, which appears much larger in ads and in movies. The clock faces are made of Opal and the clock is estimated to be worth $10-20 million.

Empire State of Mind

Today I thought I would give you a view of New York from the Top of the Rock (Rockefeller Center). I captured this 6 shot panorama as viewed from the top of the Rockefeller Center looking directly toward the Empire State Building. The Empire State Building happened to be lit up in red, white and blue this evening adding to the view. To the right of the Empire State Building is the Bank of America Tower and Condé Nast Building , to the left in the distance is the Chrysler Building.

The Painted Ladies

I was looking back to a trip I took out to San Francisco last year and this image just seemed to stand out. I thought I would re-share this image for my blog viewers who have never seen The Painted Ladies.

The Painted Ladies are Victorian houses built back in the late 1800′s, early 1900′s. The term, Painted Ladies was used to describe Victorian and Edwardian houses and buildings painted in three or more colors that embellish or enhance their architectural details. The term was first used for San Francisco Victorian houses by writers Elizabeth Pomada and Michael Larsen in their 1978 book Painted Ladies – San Francisco’s Resplendent Victorians. This set of Victorian homes are located next to Alamo Square Park on Steiner Street.

Some of you may remember scenes from the sitcom, Full House done on the grass in front of these houses. I think that’s how I first became familiar with these homes. Another factoid, if you go further down on Steiner Street you can see the house that was in the movie Mrs. Doubtfire.

Mekhi and Alyus – A Day at the Park

Mekhi and Alyus two brothers that are inseparable! They have so much fun together seeing who is fastest, who can climb the highest and to see who’s the strongest.

I spent a day at the park with them, climbing, crawling through tunnels, sliding, running around and just plain having a great time! Alyus and Mekhi had so much energy I could hardly keep up with these two amazing boys.

This was photo session was a gift from their Grandmother to their Mother for Mother’s Day. What great keepsake for Mom on her special day!

Warning Strike

This past Saturday I was out capturing some images of the Supermoon. Storm clouds were present that evening and just as quickly as the clouds lifted to show the moon, then came back again and with a vengeance. We had heavy winds, rain, lightning and hail in a matter of minutes and I was leaving the area just as my car was being pelted by the hail. Luckily I was on the edge and no damage to my car. Some of the lightning strikes struck in open fields not more than 1/4 mile away. I knew I was too close for comfort at that point.

I did manage to capture a lightning strike on the horizon before it got too close. I call it my warning strike.

Lone Bison

I’m changing it up a bit and bringing you some wildlife today. This image is so simplistic, but an image that could be interpreted to say so many things depending on the perspective. I really like the compression brought to this image by the long lens and the layers it created.

My 70-200mm lens (and in this image used with a 2x Extender) has become one of my favorite lenses. It so versatile from capturing sports and action as well as being used for portraits. I love the fall off of the lens and the why it compresses images to isolate the subject. Here it is the Lone Bison from one of my favorite places, an open field near Jackson Lake in Grand Teton National Park.

Supermoon at DIA

The Supermoon was this past Saturday. I had scoped it all out on Google Maps and ventured out near DIA. I was hoping for an image of the moon rising over the white teepee structure over Denver International Airport (DIA), but when I drove out, the road I had hoped to get my image from was blocked off and was part of private airport property. So knowing that I didn’t have enough time to venture further north of the airport I took what was available to me and setup in some open farmland with a view of the runways and the main tower, which was slightly visible on the horizon.

The day had clouded over and I wasn’t sure I was going to even get a view of the Supermoon, but just as the sun was setting, the clouds lifted off of the horizon enough so the moon would be in view as it rose above the horizon. The winds were still quite brisk and I had to weigh down my tripod in order to keep it steady enough for a few shots. I had plenty of shots where a big gust of wind vibrated my tripod and I ended up with a blurry shot.

I’m going to give you two images today, one with a broader view including DIA and one close up where you can see the main tower and some of the tails of the airplanes on the runway as the moon is rising.

I have a rather busy week. I’m working on documenting a new art show for a friend of mine, Sarah Richter. She has her first exclusive studio showing at Hinterland this week in the Rhino Art District here in Denver. I’m documenting and helping her put together her amazing acrylic and mirrored art display this week in preparation for the opening this Friday. I’m hoping to have a time-lapse of the build in the next week. It’s going to be an amazing piece.

I’m working on a project that I hope to share with you in the next month or two. Anyway, Max happened to be on of the “man’s best friends” running around while I was shooting for the project. I’m usually nervous around dobermans but max was such a friendly dog. Anyway meet Max!

Sneak Peek: Mekhi and Alyus

I shot a photo session with Mekhi and Alyus this past weekend. These boys were full of energy and so much fun to be around! I had trouble keeping up with these two brothers as they ventured in and through the tunnels of the playground. The raw images look fantastic “straight out of the can”. The final images are going to make a great Mother’s Day gift!

I’m in New York City this week so my blogging will be a little light this week. I couldn’t resist publishing these images for a quick sneak peek.
